What do I have to do in order to become an air traffic controller?

What do I have to do in order to become an air traffic controller?

You've got three options, but for all of them you'll have to be under 31. You can do a federal job search and apply off the street. Its quick (well for government standards) and free, but the downside is you've got about a 2% chance of getting through all the selection and training processed.

You can join the military and do ATC there then apply for an FAA job when you get out. Longest of the three methods, but the only one where you get paid while you're learning (I'm not counting what they pay at the academy). You should have enough experience to get through the FAA training with little difficulty. Just a matter of learning how civilian controllers do things differently than the military.

Last route is CTI (controller training initiative) school. You've got 13 options listed on www.atccti.com You'll get a degree from a college or university and major in ATC just like you would in math or history. This way is the one you have to pay for, but the FAA guarentees you a job and is the only route that does so.

Aside from that, I'd suggest not getting any drug related criminal offenses, making sure you aren't color blind / don't have any major health conditions and stay clear of any and all felonies.

Hope that helps.
