If you've been on the job for over a year and you have a death in the family can you get paid for being off

Only if your company offers it as a benefit. There is no law that says you should be paid for bereavement. You may be able to take time off under the "Family Leave Act" without the threat of being fired, but if you want to be paid for it, you may need to take vacation time.
If it is part of your companies policy. Most will not have that benefit, but you can use your vacation time.
Check your employers guidelines. Most employers allow 3 da. for immediate family and 1 da. for non.

What is your company policy? Some companies have gone to grouping it all under one umbrella. Most companies used to give 3 days for a close relative, mother father sibling.
