What do you think the AVERAGE American's DEBT is?

The last study I saw was on MSN from 2003 that said something like each American household owes $18,000 in consumer debt, excluding mortgages. Source(s): http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/savi...

Seems like I recently heard it is around $8000 or so, but that is only credit card debt - doesn't include mortgages and vehicles, but just unsecured debt.
$250,000 depending on if they own a home

$35,000 renting
I don't know about average, maybe $10,000. Thank God not me though!
