Would you rent or make do in a renovation?

I am buying a house in need of full modernisation, do I rent elsewhere costing extra money, or make do in a no central heated or electricity house? With the kids!!Any other options??

Rainbow, whilst it will be more expensive I know from experience that living in the mess you are trying to do up will take you three times as long as what it would if you were not there.

Yes it will cost but get your finger on the pulse and just go for it.
As a plumber I jump at the chance to work in empty property as I know I can get the job done far quicker and I wont have the annoying " but I was hoping to have a shower "in my ear at the end of the day.

Bite the bullet, just make sure you have a plan and stick to it.

Best of luck
You can look into loans that allow you to do renovations to your new home. You can talk to a mortgage broker in your area about these. If you can not find anyone you can contact me and I will help you locate someone in your area.

But buying a home is wonderful feeling not to mention the tax benefits.
Can you rent a travel trailer and stay on your property? That would be my choice.
Ugh!! Living with kids in a home that is being renovated is absolute hell!!! I would say if budget allowes stay somewhere else.
Only you can decide. It depends greatly on your financial situation. If you can afford it don't move in till you have at least electricity. Could you borrow a caravan and put it in the garden? Stay where you are until you have hot water and heat? Have you friends or family nearby who would allow baths etc. if you do decide to barve the hardship?
I wish you all luck with this adventure.
We bought a house that was just a shell, no electrics, no hot water, no kitchen, no bathroom, no heating etc.

We'd been renting so we agreed with our landlord to use our deposit as our final months rent, and just blitzed it. We did our own bathroom suite (still haven't tiled it) and electrics as my husband is qualified and a professional did the central heating.

We moved in with no kitchen but just plumbed a sink in, wired in a cooker and used an old sideboard for storage and worktop.

Our children were babies really, so it didn't bother them too much. If you can atleast get the worst jobs done especially anything dusty such as channelling out if you have younger children.

The big question is, do you need to do any jobs that with your childrens ages could endanger them.

Good luck.
