Roomate is screwing me out of money!!? |
I rent a 3 bedroom house from my grandmother, I am the only one on the lease. One of my best friends rents one room and we let a coworker of our move into the other with her boyfriend. Two weeks ago she told us that they would be moving out at the end of August. A week later she mentioned leaving at the beginning of August instead and my friend and I scrambled to come up with the extra rent, which we did just barely. Without telling us they moved out today! Breaking both agreements they made. Still, they're not on the lease! Is there anything I can do to get this money!? With utilities and all this is going to cost me $500-650. Any ideas? Unless you had a sublease with them, no...there is nothing you can do. Cry me a river... Lesson learned... Hopefully you'll never do that again. You have a rude co worker. If you did not get her to sign a sublease agreement, you may as well drop the matter as far as court action is concerned. You'd be lucky to get a settlement even on Judge Judy. Start looking for another person to fill that third room immediately. Welcome to the world of being a landlord. Hold back their security deposit. You DID get a security deposit, right?? If you have proof of all this small claims court. But always have things in writing. Its called syoa, (save Your own ***). Unfortunately, no. Without having them on the lease, you're the only one responsible. A verbal agreement will stand up in some courts whether the judge believes you or not is the problem. Small claims court is an option. |
