When should I move out of my apartment at the end of my lease?


This might be dumb but this is only the first time I'll be moving from one apartment to another. My apartment's lease end's at the end of August. So that means I'll have to be moved out by August 31st, right? So when I look for a new apt, I should check for availability in August not September right? Or will places that technically say "available September 1st" let me move in a week earlier? (I can't actually move in the day of 9/1) And if I get one with availability in Aug, will I have to pay for the full month even though I won't be moving in til the end of it?

First, starting looking for an apartment now. You can usually choose what date you want to move in. Consider the distance you will be moving and how many trips you have to make. Can you do it in a day? A weekend? Will you need a week? Then work back from when you want to be out of your old place (leaving time to clean) and ask to move into your new place on that date.

You might have another problem. Just because your lease ends, that doesn't mean that you are free to go. You probably have to give notice that you are leaving. That could be 30 or 60 days. Have you given notice that you are leaving your old place? If not, you should also check on that.
Most apartments will let you pay only for the days you live there in August. You need to be looking right now for an apartment for the end of August. It would be nice if you could give yourself a few days or even a week, but you would have to pay rent at both places. And you will HAVE to do that if you can't move in the 9/1. Just make sure you clean your old apartment really well.
inky, use the time available to look for an apt now and cleanup your old one while doing so.
If you find one, state your case and you may be able to prorate a few days before the official days comes to leave and you can move in without sweating the LL in either apt building.
