How do you go to the grand father of all search engines? DMOZ, mentioned elsewhere, is not a search engine, but a human-edited directory (much like Yahoo was in its early days). Directories do not display lists of web pages based on keywords, instead they list web sites by category and subcategory. DMOZ is not even the oldest directory, it was founded in 1998, 4 years after Yahoo. The grandfather of all search engines was Archie, created in 1990 at McGill University in Montreal. Archie was an internet search engine, but not a WEB search engine, since it predated the rise of the WWW. The first true web search was Wandex in 1993, which is now defunct.
