You can submit your website to the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and others for free. Just do a search to find some places. Another way to promote is by setting up a blog or using traffic exchanges as I am doing right now.

You can also pay to advertise if you like by bidding on keywords or using pay-per-click with Yahoo and others.

Yahoo and most of the other major search engines allow free website submissions, but there's no guarantee that you'll get indexed. If you spend some money, though, they'll give you express inclusion in their directories.
