Is paying an SEO agency a waste of money?

I've heard from some that it's not worth it and that I can do it on my own. Anyone?

Thanks

It's like any other service industry: There are some agencies that are good and some that are not. If you pay $5,000 for an SEO project from a not-so-good agency, and you don't get any return on your investment, that's a waste of money. If you pay $20,000 to a good agency, and the project helps you make $50,000 profit ... not a waste of money. Whatever you spend, you need to be able to justify the expense.

Can you do it on your own? Of course. Again, like any other service, you can spend your time instead of your money and educate yourself. You can also learn to fix your own car, build your own house, etc.

If you have more time than money, I would take this route. There are lots of great resources on the web and in print for learning about SEO, PPC, social media, link building, etc.

Hope this helps. Source(s): Matt McGee / Small Business SEM

It really depends on how difficult your site will be to optimize. If you sell one or two products or your site revolves around one theme, it can be pretty easy.

If your site does not revolve around one product or theme, then you may need help.

But SEO firms can be very very expensive and in many cases, the return on investment is not worth it.

My site is a very difficult site to optimize but I learned a step-by-step method to optimize each page.

I am now #1 in Google for a product I sell - and I can prove it.

I wrote more about it on my blog below:

I think paying for a SEO can be very expensive if the return you expect for that investment is less than 10 thousand dollars. SEO requires time, plenty analysis and personnel, so that won't make it too cheap.

If you want to save, you can hire a SEO company in India or Peru. Service is very good in both countries and the price is much cheaper. You can also go on your own, but you'll have to learn.

Good luck.
SEO requires a lot of time and effort. SEO companies do this for a living - they have the time and (some) have the effort. Some SEO companies are not ethical in their practices so, unless you know at least a little about SEO, you are at their mercy. I strongly recommend learning SEO basics: http://www.spiderseeker.com

The answer to your question depends on how much time and effort you are willing and able to put into SEO. There are many things involved in SEO; a lot of testing, research and patience.

If you are targeting your products or services to a highly competetive market, you will more than likely have to resort to spending some money on advertising to obtain better search engine ranking for your highly competetive keywords.
in general it is a waste of money because you waste dollars to chase pennies - it is only worthed if you have a whole bunch of websites and you are busy with more important things then optimizing.
