When you create good content on your web site, you can display a digg button and invite people to digg it. The more people "digg " your site, the higher a profile it will have. Once your site is listed in "digg' the digg community can vote on how good it is. The sites with the highest votes are displayed on the front page where thousands and thousands of people can see it. This increases clickthrough traffic as well as search engine traffic, because the search engines give your site a higher ranking. Note that all of this depends on having quality content that other people will "digg" and give high votes. I also discourage faking the results by asking huge numbers of people to digg your site to do you a favor. The social networking sites view this as spam and you might be penalized.
