I registered a website with Yahoo, yet I can't find it when I search for it. Can you help me be sure it's up?

I have a small business that I'm trying to promote. I have a website, but even though I've registered it with Yahoo and Google (and provided metatags, etc.), I still can't locate my site using those tags. How do I assure my site is registered and can be found by potential customers?
Thanks.

Yahoo will not list a business site for free in its directory. The only way Yahoo will play nice is if you go for the paid listing. Even then, they promise to "consider" your site but do not promise to list it if it doesn't meet their requirements.

Now, as for Google. It can take months before a web site gets indexed in Google. Even then, there is no guarantee it will get good ranking, because you are facing a huge amount of competition.

There is a way to speed things along, but it is rather labor intensive.

You will aim at making your web site into an "authority" site. An authority site is one that Google considers important because it has a lot of people linking to it.

So -- what you are going to do is try to get links. Here are some of the methods you can use:

1. Write articles pertaining to your topic. Submit them to some of the web's many article directories. Each article contains your ad at the bottom, and a live link to your site. Not only do you get this link, but when other publishers use your articles on their site, you will get that link as well.

2. Create a Squidoo lens on your topic. Link the lens to your web site. Squidoo lenses get indexed in google much sooner than web sites - sometimes within days.

3. Create a number of blogs using the free blog services that abound on the net. Google "free blogs" and you will get tons. Optimise each blog with your keyword terms and link it to your web site. Blogs sometimes get indexzed within a matter of hours,

4. Join Facebook, MySpace and other social netorking sites. Promote your authority site in these services.

5. Give "love" to your blogs and published articles by bookmarking them at the social bookmarking sites. Use Social Poster to do this quickly (although the first time is time consuming because you have to join all of the sites first.) If you have 3-4 friends who will help out, ask each of them to bookmark your site also. Please no spamming. Three or four is enough.

6. Refer to the link below for 30 free ways to et web site traffic. Source(s): http://www.nightcats.com/samples/traffic...
Unfortunately just because you "registered" your site with the search engines doesn't mean that they will show up in those search engines right away. These sites themselves will tell you that when you submit your site it may take them a few months to get to your site.

So you are going to have to work on getting your site in the search engines yourself! Basically the way to do that is to decide which search terms you want your site to be associated with and then you see where your site ranks. If you don't like where your site ranks then you work on incorporating those search terms into the content of your site.
