Any ideas for a service oriented business that can be done part-time in one's own neighborhood/metro area? |
I work 40hrs/wk, but I feel like I'm on a treadmill & I can't make enough to get ahead. Eventually, I want to be able to find a line of work that will allow me to run it as my own business. So, if anyone has any ideas, either a service oriented business that I can do in my neighborhood/metro area or, a business that I can start small & grow, I would greatly appreciate it. Every business functions by serving customers. What works for *other* neighborhoods might not work for *your* neighborhood, because your neighborhood is already served. So you can look for what other neighborhoods have, that yours does not. My wife and I took our dog to a dog wash this afternoon. It was next to a car wash, and you deposited a $5 bill - or more - for 10 minutes. You turned a knob to select whether the sprayer sent out water with detergent, or water with flea detergent, or oatmeal detergent, or conditioner, or rinse water, or you turned it to dry, and the air hose sent out warm air. The dog walked up a ramp to the wash area, and one of us was on each side, which was a lot better than the bathtub, where we have to be on our knees, and both of us are on one side of the dog. I think that kind of business is going to take off. They're open 24x7, but you could continue your present job for now, and clean and maintain the place in your evenings. Or my wife mentioned that there's a guy who comes around with a van, and washes your dog without your having to load him in the car and drive him someplace. Some dogs hate to get in the car. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd want to do that for a living, because even friendly dogs can bite without meaning to, when they are overwrought. I'm not trying to sell you on the idea of a dog wash. Maybe you want to do lawn mower repair instead. It's not just your neighborhood - it's YOU as well. The work day is too long, and life is too short, to do work you hate doing. Just keep your eyes open. I see at least five business opportunities every day, things I would love to do if only I had the time and the money to pursue everything. The thing is, you need to find a need, and fill a way to satisfy it. If the customer doesn't have an itch, it doesn't matter how good you are at scratching, he's not going to hand you any money. Home companion services or pet-sitting service If you have a home computer set up with the basic MS office pro software, you can absolutely work as a virtual assistant. You can either function on your own, or work with a virtual staffing company. I am working with a start up virtual staffing company (that also has a training class for new VAs).
