How do I start my own trash hauling business? |
I want to start a hauling business, that involves the removal of residential rubbish, construction debris and also do light demolition. How do I go about in starting my own business? and how do I price the work that Im going to do? That could be difficult... and painful. You know who dominates the "sanitation engineering" industry. make some phone calls to hauling businesses and ask questions or go online and get information on your topic For about 12 months I had a hauling business. Basically it was just me with my pickup and a trailer. I contacted a host of real estate rental managers and landlords, and when they needed stuff hauled away because of water damage, junk left by tenants or whatever, they called and I hauled. It was really simple to do, just took time, and effort, and gas. I charged $25 a load, plus any landfill fees. I'd guess, depending on where you are, you could do the same for $40-50. Removing construction debris and doing demolition is a bit tricker. Because of the changes in real estate laws, most people doing that sort of work need to be a registered contractor with business license, insurance, etc. So it is a much bigger proposition. One way to get started is to find some small time contractors - not the big ones, but the small time remodeling guys, the ones doing work they don't need building permits for. They'll often hire someone for a few hundred to do the demolition and haul the trash away. But to make good money (and you can) you have to go the extra step and get the crontractors license, etc. I wasn't willing to do that, which is why I stopped. Get your permits first, that will be the hardest part. There are lots of laws and regulations pertaining to disposal. You also need a license for demolition. |
