Setting up a company what do I need to know about employing staff from overseas on a casual basis?

I am setting up a company and cannot take any staff on on a permanent basis yet. Some of the work I can provide will only be for one or two days a week. What should I do about tax. Also what should I know about employing foreign workers from Rumania.

make sure they have valid work permits etc.
why don't you employ local people who need work , instead of exploiting foreign workers paying below min wage
Key things to know:
1. You'll have to do their PAYE, even though they're casual
2. Make sure you get hold of a proper contract for services, or you may face employment tribunal claims
3. Collect copies of relevant documents proving their entitlement to work, and ensuring that they register on the Workers Registration Scheme if necessary.

The two key sites for you to look at are:
- http://www.hmrc.gov.uk and
- http://www.employingmigrantworkers.org.u...

...and to the above poster - you're an idiot. Because of the migrant quota system a lot of the fruit grown by British farmers this year simply rotted in the fields. Migrant workers do the jobs British people simply don't want to do, or aren't willing to do because they're in better paid jobs already. We have an under-employment problem in Britain.

Also, I'm sure that demi as a law abiding citizen will be paying the minimum wage!
When I was considering taking the step of employing staff, I found my tax office were invaluable, they are available on the end of a phone with all the legislation you need. They also do a range of leaflets as an introduction on taking on staff. Taking on staff is a minefield under any circumstances, I am sure adding foreign workers to the equation will complicate things even further. Why can't you employ people from your own country? Unless you specifically need people with a Romanian mother tongue, or you are an unscrupulous employer hoping to exploit and underpay, Surely it is better to offer employment to your own people first? If you are hoping to offer employment on humanitarian grounds, ie try to help those in poverty, there are people living in poverty throughout the world, including the so called super power states, you just have to open your eyes and you will find them.
Soap box now dismounted, I wish you well with the next step of your business and all the very best of luck and prosperity!
I recently set up a small business and tried to employ staff from this country. I employed two british guys who insisted on being paid cash in hand and spent most of the working day smoking fags and drinking tea. No work was completed.

I then employed two foreign workers who WERE PAID ABOVE THE MININUM WAGE AND WERE NOT EXPLOITED and these were the best and most hard working employees.

This is why many people do not employ people from this country because they are lazy and want to be paid for nothing.
