Starting a video game business? |
I'm thinking of starting my own video game company and I'm looking for suggestions. Anything I need to know? I'm a comp sci major, and I need to find a team still. Since you are a comp science major and have never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. If you intend to establish the business in the USA and you are living there, I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE. The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is sound advice because it will force you to dig up all of the start up details and the costs of starting a video game company and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them. Remember you'll build product (games) but you need to sell them and you definitely have to project the size of your market, how much you'll sell your product for, and get a good feel for how long it will take you to break even. As you build your team, I would look to add members with skills that complement those you lack. If you need to get financing they'll not only want to know your ability to make product but also how you'll get the product to market and run the day-to-day aspects of the business.
