Is it ok to make a tax payment check to IRS? |
after sending my check made out to IRS, I realized it should be made to US Treasury. Will this be a problem? The IRS is an agency of the Treasury Dept. Relax. :) The IRS will cash your check. Have no fear. As long as it's in the payment envelope, the IRS will keep it. Even when taxpayers mistakenly send their state-balance-due check to the federal government, it gets cashed, says Burlison. "It's truly a matter of volume. It's not necessarily what's written on the payee line." The checks are just stamped "received" and taken to the bank. Back in 1998, the IRS announced that taxpayers should make their checks payable to "United States Treasury," instead of the "Internal Revenue Service." Here's why. Too many taxpayers got lazy, abbreviated and wrote the check to the "IRS" -- even though the instructions warned against it. -Dwayne The IRS has NEVER turned down any amount of money, period! The check, unless mailed this morning, has already been cashed, your funds removed from the bank, and a set of accountants are pouring over your return to see if the IRS can get more of your money. (trust that they will find a way..they are very good at finding ways). Now, if the check bounces, that is another story all together...Oh, boy! |
