What is the point of filing for a tax extension if you have to pay anyway?

umm
You avoid a late filing if you owe taxes. Also if you are required to file the long form (1040) and you do not have
the time. It is much easier to file a 1 page document than
5 - 7.

The bottom line is that it buys you additional time to file the paper work.
If you OWE -- then you avoid any $$ penalty for late filing, as well as the interest. So send them what you paid last year as a sign of good faith.
Actually either way you will have to pay interest if you do not pay the full amount of tax due with the extension. However you can avoid the penalty for failure to file on time by extenting.
it just allows you to more time to file your return.
