If one is a US citizen and receives an inheritance from the Netherlands, is he responsible for paying inheritance taxes and if so in which country?
The US has entered into an estate tax treaty with the Netherlands so the taxation would be governed under that treaty. I don't know of any place online where you could get a copy of the treaty but you should consult a tax practitioner - either in the U.S. or the Netherlands (or both).
Generally speaking, if we have a treaty with another country, each of the assets of the estate will only be taxed by one of the two countries. The treaties are designed to prevent double taxation. |
