Most Companies that approach me with an opportunity asks my current salary. Am I obliged to tell them? Not obligated; but they will probably need to get a sense of what you are making in order to make you an offer. It is to your advantage to do so. They know that you won't leave your current position unless you receive an offer for considerably more. They need to know your current salary in order to come up with a figure they thing you will accept and that they can offer. You are not necessarily obliged, but this is a standard question. The reason is that they want to know if they can afford you. If you are making $80,000 a year and their job only pays $30,000 they know they will be wasting their time on you. If on the other hand you are making $30,000 and their job pays $80,000 they might question whether you are qualified or might start you at say $40,000 to see if you are good enough to earn $80,000. If you feel that you are not currently being paid enough, you could disclose the amount and tell them in the interview that the reason you are looking is that you feel you are worth more. No, it is not necessary to reveal your salary. They ask because they want to evaluate how much more they can offer than your current salary. Of late it has become a common practice to see people expecting 30% hike on every job change therefore the companies would need to know your current salary to make a better offer. No you're not and it most cases I wouldn't. Tell them that you are being paid fairly for resposibilities that you have and you trust they will too (something like that). Remember you are trying to sell yourself to them. Think about commercials, you need to make them see how much they NEED you to work for them and how much of an asset you would be to their company BEFORE you tell them how much it's going to cost them. If you tell them your current salary you may never get the chance to sell yourself. No. They want to know what to pay you. Tell them, instead, what you want, not what you're making. No, but if you don't complete their application form, they don't have to interview you. |
