Please clear my doubt regarding system admin?

Do working as a system admin or a network admin in a company involves night shift or working in nights

Yes my dear.. you'll have to. And this profession is not suitable for girls generally.

When a system or network goes down, you dont have any time to go back to home. You may have to spend your entire night solving a small network related query. And if you struck with any virus relted problem in your network, you might have to stay at your work place for a day or two to fix entire network.

I had to do so.... ;-)
Most of the time it doesn't. In fact I've never heard of someone working at night as sys. admin
Generally I'd think an admin would have to be present during the busy hours to handle problems that occur as a result. However, there are different kinds of admins. If your responsibilities lie in implementing new policies, that may not require you to be there during the company's day hours, maybe you'll have to work at night. Or if you're doing night security for their systems, monitoring accounts throughout the world or country, maybe.. Also, as their link for quite an important company infrastructure, you may have to be on call always. If there a disaster that requires your clearance or knowledge to handle... you need to get there.
It can involve such hours.

Typically in the IT profession we do a lot of trouble shooting, so we need to have working hours when the work force can get a hold of us.

Typically we do a lot of changes to software and files, that need to be done when no one else is on the computer system, which means we have to do some work outside regular work force working hours.

In my case, this means my working day is from approx
11 am to 1 am during the week
then another 4-6 hours over a normal weekend
and 8-20 hours over an end fiscal weekend

I don't work straight thru. I get meal breaks, but many times for my break I do something to help me relax & unwind, like coming here to Yahoo Answers, or visiting Wikipedia.

and this counts as being a part time worker, because I am on the road to retirement ... I do not have the stamina that I had when I was much younger.

The hours we can work are heavily dependent on the level of stress. When I was younger (until maybe age 40) and there was next to no stress, I could work from say 9 am to 3 am every day of the week and weekend, and still get plenty of sleep. I no longer have that stamina.

I disagree with an earlier respondent that this work is unsuitable for girls. Unless you live in an urban area where street crime makes it hazardous for you to be going home at 3 am, I think there's not a lot of women in the profession because of stupid stereotypes.
