Can a techie mom (software eng) take off 3 years and find a job? |
I am thinking of quitting my job to be with my daughter for the next 3 years (until she goes to grade school). I will need to go back to work because we will run out of savings at that point. My husband will provide the other income that we need while I am not working. Can I leave my techie job (software engineer) and come back to work in 3 years? I don't see why you would have any problems leaving and coming back especially with the amount of experience you have under your belt. Just don't get behind on the mainstream technology while you're out. Like when the .NET languages replace JAVA ;) I am so glad that you asked this question. So many people make this decision and then experience hard times reentering the work force. Technology is such an ever-changing field that you have to be in it somehow to stay current. If you decide to leave the workforce, just make sure that you find a way to dabble in the industry while you are away. Take some courses (online or otherwise), do some contract work, act as an entrepreneur on a limited basis. Something that will show a potential employer (down the line) that you are passionate about your field and that you have put forth an effort to remain up-to-date as you take care of your family. I like the answer from the first person to a point. College will help you. My B/F has a PhD in CIS (along with a dbl. masters; one being CIS and the other an MBA). It would be hard for him to reenter. You need to split up the babysitting duties with hubby. He works and you watch, when he's home you college and he watch. In 3 you could have a current masters and make more than you do now. Probably more than hubby. That Masters speaks loud and clear in any language |
