Why do computer programmers have such high salaries? Yea Im kinda jealous.? Not all programmers are highly paid. It depends on the language they program in and the kind of demand for the skills that person has to what kind of salary they make. Salaries have fallen considerably since the Y2K problem has passed and the dot coms are not what they were. Also, a lot of companies are outsourcing their programming to India, China and the like so those who do hold permanent positions are not being paid as much. Programmers who were making 100K 10 years ago might be making 50 - 70K now if the language they program in is still viable. If you go to Monster.com or Dice.com, etc., you can see that starting salaries are often in the 30s-40s unless a programmer is highly experienced or specialized. Specialized knowledge that few have - called in the market - Law of Supply & Demand The actual Computer Programmer is not the guy that writes games and little applications, these programmers are the ones that control the operation of the big mainframe computers such as IBM, each of the programmers specializes in a small area of the system such as CICS or Cobol or even in just the TCP/IP stack. I work for a large corporation and the programmers all make at least 6 figures (over $100K). It is a highly skilled position. The programmers that write games and various applications are now known as software engineers. |
