Been at a job for same amount of time as someone, but have no prior experience, huge difference ? |
I just graduated college, and started work at a job, but I have no prior experience. There are others that have been there the same amount of time, and fulfill similar responsibilities, but have prior experience. Is there and should there be a considerable difference in terms of consideration for promotions, salary and such? I would have to say yes, education is important, but experience is gold to employers, as this will conceivably make for less of a learning curve. Employers like the fact someone has done the job before and can most likely "jump right in" and start producing immediately with minimal training. Sometimes this can be discussed with your manager and goals can be set up-when met a raise would be granted, sometimes you have to go to another company or department to get the benefits of being experienced. In any case, I would discuss in a non confrontational manner with your manager to see what would be needed to bring you up to speed with your coworkers. There probably is. The question is which end of the consideration are you on? yes..most high end job salaries are based on experience...promotion i feel should be based on performance and skill.....but yes there is a considerable difference in promos, salaries, and job contract terms when hired on experience and nonexperience There will usually be a difference in starting pay - the more experience, the higher up in the salary range you'll start. However, as far as raises and promotions, once you've been hired, overall job performance is more of a consideration. You may be the least experienced employee, but the best worker and most productive, therefore you may get a better raise and quicker promotion. |
