What is the outlook on software engineering in U.S.?

Is it true that it's hard to stay a software engineer for a long time? That is that companies are always looking for young people. Also what are the effects of outsourcing and H1B visas on software engineering in U.S.?

The answer all depends on the company and industry you work for. Software Engineering in an established company like in Banking or Finance or Pharmaceuticals is fairly stable.. IT in a startup "dot-com " type company has more potential but also more risk..

Larger companies tend to have more outsourcing because they have the money and contacts overseas to make it worth it. Most small to mid-size companies need software folks on site at least a day or two a week..

There WILL be a need for quite some time (the Internet growth alone requires it ) for IT people, outsourcing only works so much at the end of the day you need a developer close to where the action is.. good luck
