Is this game development course worth it? |
I've attended a game development course preview. The course offers a diploma for game development and the attractive thing is that it offers testimonials and direct job offers or freelance opportunities for students who make the grade. Also, enrolled students are assigned to be paid game testers. The software used for this course are: DarkBasic, GameMaker, Visual C++, Maya, 3D Max and the school's own game engine. Is this course worth a try? And is DarkBasic useful in the game industry? With Commerical gaming, you can have some knowledge of what is envolved to develop a game, but it general the work requires the work of a team. This course may give you the general knowledge you need, it will mostly likely NOT give you the detailed knowledge you will need. Instead I assume the course works best for those who are building on existing knowledge, who are using the course to survey that can be done in the field or who hope to use their skills to get on the ground floor and develop the skill they need on the job. No doubt, the course is worth it to some people, but you need to consider if it worth it to you. What are your long term goals? What objectives do you have? Does taking the course help you achieve your objectives? Consider both cost and usefulness in your evaluation. Consider how much money and time you have to invest. What other resource (like maybe a new computer) will you need? I know that most people think that game developer don't have a social life, but you should consider any socal obligations you may have, How will taking the course impact friends and family? Does your family and friends support this choice? Not that you should let these people make important decisions for you, but it is often easier to get something done, if people support your decision. Consider and compare other options you have. My rule of thumb is you should look, consider and compare you choice with at least two other alternatives. What is the impact if the worth of the course is less than you estimated? |
