Is it possible to start new career in IT field at 55?

Maybe system analyst or systems tester? Would it be too much of age discrimination?

You don't say how much, if any background you have in the IT field. If you have been a plumber all of your life, and now want to enter the IT field, it can be done, but you will definitely have an uphill battle.

Many employers value the dependability and work ethic of the older employee and this can greatly work in your favor.

Despite laws to the contrary, age discrimination will be a problem - many companies will have an issue with bringing on a 55 year old in an entry level position. They won't come right out and say it is your age, of course -- but they will find a way not to hire you.

You may have difficulty getting on at a larger company, but I think there will be plenty of opportunities at smaller companies or as an independant contractor.

If this is something you really want to do, go for it!
Umm, age discrimination is illegal in the United States. In case you didn't know. It is just up to you to decide what you want to do.
As the previous poster has said, age discrimination is illegal in the US and many other nations.

However, the sad truth is that age discrimination does exist, and it is difficult to prove especially when only one or two people make a hiring decision.

I'm afraid you will probably find it difficult to compete against younger applicants with similar qualifications - your nonrelevant experience does not help much in a technical job.
