Degree needed for a job in biotech industry? |
I am a college student studying biomolecular engineering and looking to get into the biotech industry. I am interested in doing drug research and maybe being a research director someday. I've seen PhD, M.S., and M.Eng degree programs out there, but which one is most appropriate for making one's way in the biotech industry? If you're goal is research director - please remember, that's not an entry level position. For research director at a University or Government institution, look to getting a Ph.D. minimum, then starting doing different positions at the top institutions for 5-year periods minimum. NIH, Mayo, Columbia Univ, Oregon Health System, UCLA, etc. Pray that you solve some major research problems in each position. You'll make director by your mid-fifties. More importantly, be a master at capturing federal money. Grant writing is as much an art as understanding the Kreb's Cycle - sometime even moreso. For the biotech industry (private companies), having a business skills is the major factor. Since there is no federal monies coming in, learning how to budget labs and still achieve science goals is the key. Look to earn a nighttime/part-time/on-line MBA and start where ever in a private company. Pray that the company doesn't fold or get parcelled off in your time. Look to make career jumps in 3-year intervals. Source(s): 1997-2004 - Walter Reed (US Army) 2004-2007 Small Private Corporation 2007-Current Mid-Sized Corporation ? There is a wide range of job in biotech industry. Bio companies need people anywhere from mechanical engineer, chemical engineer, biologist, mathematician, computer scientist to just name a few. My suggestion is that you go to a job site like HotJobs or biotech companies' web sites to do some research. Find the type of job you like based on their job descriptions. In almost all cases, they will tell you what kind of degree is required to get those jobs. Best wishes. |
