I would say the single most thing is having the right skill set. That is, knowing the programming languages that are in demand and getting your certifications. Additionally, many managers complain that their IT people cannot communicate effectively and have a poor business sense. So, being able to communicate with you peers, clients, vendors, and bosses is extremely important. Being able to see the business-side of every project is also a key school.
