Computer Science Major - current DBA - early switch in careers? |
I majored in computer science late in college and finished as an above average student in about 2.5 years. I had always been interested in something different but I really liked the tech aspect. Now I'm a couple years into the real world, doing web/database development and a partial DBA, and starting to get scared of my future. I have frequent thoughts about how this is very monotonous in front of a monitor all day, not being the best programmer, etc. If I make a slight/major career switch, it should probably be sooner than later. What are some possibilities considering my background? What could I go to grad school for considering my bachelor's in computer science? What kind of jobs could I look for so I don't decrease my salary but I could still apply my former skills to? (Examples: I like creativeness, animals, people, change) I realize this is kind of vague, but I would appreciate all thoughts and suggestions since I may not have even thought of them before! Thanks! Nikki There is a "Major to Career Converter" on Monster.com that really helped me. It will give you an idea about what you can do with your degree. Source(s): http://content.monstertrak.monster.com/t... My recommendation would be to consider a career in IT management. The growth and variety that you are looking for will happen for you if set your sights on management-oriented jobs in the IT sector. There is a shortage of IT management talent in the United States. (see article in Fortune). The top IT projects for 2007 all require a significant business orientation. Ask yourself: Do you like solving problems in a team setting? Do you see yourself leading project teams in a global environment? If the answer to these questions is yes, start reading the following magazines. It should be motivation to 'move ahead'. www.cio.com www.baselinemag.com www.computerworld.com http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/f... http://www.jmu.edu/cis/careers.html... |
