I want to get into IT, but my Bachelor's degree is in liberal arts, do I need to get another degree in IT?

I have had some experience designing websites (in the past and currently), could I just build on that experience and maybe a couple of certifications, or would an IT degree make me more competitive?

You'll need either the certifications or an IT degree and certifications.

Liberal Arts degree won't get you an IT job Source(s): 23 years in the IT field
The bottom line is you'll really pay a price to get good in IT...usually more than 4 years of training and an undergrad degree is just for starters in most cases. (one of the reasons the field pays better is you make twice the sacrifice you do in other fields). Without the degree, it's hard to get an employer to look at you, and without it you'd be INSANE to attempt a Master's in IT. Certifications, well, are by far most useful when an IT graduate wants to enhance his/her skills--and many times the important ones ost a fortune to get (1000s for each one).

Knowing one area in IT alone-- does not work as much these days because everything is interconnected--meaning, most employers want someone with the 4-year degree.

If you set up your own business in web design and don't have an IT degree or knowledge of how they go about things--your competitors will likely blow you out of the water in a short time. Trust me, they don't mess around when they have even up to 15,000 clients...
