Low salary in the computer field. help? |
I work for a software company in the cincinnati area. I work in the operating dept. I am making 33,000 and feel I should be at 40. I have an associates degree in computer science. I have been working there 9 months. My year review is in 3 months and i'm thinking they dont give that high of raises. How can I convince them to pay me more? Should I be making more money or? What is a typical first raise jump, percentage wise? p.s. My performance is good, and I never miss work, etc. Based on what you do, that's probably fair pay. You're not a network administrator, database administrator, or software engineer. That's where the money is at in IT. To be sure, check salary.com . For Cincinnati, you are being paid well for you duties and qualifications. However, if I were you I would get a bachelors degree or some good certs before you get outsourced or replaced with someone who is willing to work for less. Try to figure out how you can get back to school and get your BS. Your never going to be making big $ without it. Go at night and on the weekend if you have to. It's well worth the effort. I agree with the previous answers, certifications and experience are important when it comes to boosting an IT salary. Just so you know, the typical salary for a Software Engineer/Developer in Cincinnati ranges from $51,654 - $65,879. Based on that salary range, it might be well worth your time to pursue further education. If you want to find more accurate data for your specific IT position, taking your skills, experience, and location into consideration, you can take PayScale's free salary survey. http://www.payscale.com/?src=yahooa... Hope that helps, Assistant to Dr. Salary http://www.payscale.com/af/calc.aspx?job... My advice would be for you to get a bachelor degree in CS or BIS and start advertising this to your boss. If they do care about advancing you in your computer field, then this will be a good incentive to keep you and promote you. Try sharing what you learned and try to apply on any upcoming project to prove that your degree is benefiting you and you are better equipped now with education. Worse case, if they don't give you a raise, ask them to promote your education and pay for it; which is like a temporary raise. If still they don't appreciate your degree and knowledge, you will now have 2 related degrees that you can look somewher else with a better starting pay. first u are monitoring files...ftp sites...any hs graduate studying those stuff as a hobbies can do it. unless u are doing some type of programming or other stuff like networking...u not gonna be making much. |
