What is a good starting salary for a 2 year degree in Computer Networking? |
I'm currently an Intern in St. Louis for a big communications company for local City and State Courts and Police. As far as I've been told they hire almost every intern and I've worked here for 6 Months and it is paid internship. I've been told that you start out at $34,500 and after 6 months probationary term you go to $36,000. I'll only have a 2 year technical degree. But, I go to a very well known technical college that has a great reputation for its graduates. I was just curious to what a good starting salary was. I plan on being a Network Administrator or WAN. That sounds about right, a lot of people expect to make $60 yr just because they have a Degree, but experience means more than anything else in IT. Experience will make up for a degree, experience + certs will help even more. Getting a foot in the door in IT is the hardest part, so take the $36 a year and work your way up.Think of it this way, they are basically paying you while training you. Definitely get the CCNA, Cisco certs generally hold more respect than Microsoft, especially if you want to get into Network Admin work. You seem young, so be happy with your current salary, but not satisfied. In your line of work you'll be constantly going to school to be certified for this, or that. As your certifications increase, so will your salary. A good Cisco systems certification should start you in the 50+ range, along with your current degree. Another factor is, if your a girl, how hot are you? It will affect your pay. If your a male, better be buff and be willing to bang the boss's wife if he asks you to. It's a materialistic world, and it's not fair. But hey, no one said the ride would be easy, just that you would get there. Have fun and do a good job, the rest will take care of itself. That sounds like a reasonable starting wage for a 2 year degree and minimal experience. Information Technology is such a diverse field that I encourage you to keep your eyes and ears open for other areas that interest you. Training is an ongoing responsibility in every IT organization and if you maximize your use of that training you will only increase your value to this company or the next. I also wouldn't pay a lot of attention to anyone who suggests that sexual favors are part of the job or expected in this field...regardless of your gender. |
