How to advance in IT?

I have 15 years in IT at 6 different companies. I started as a network admin and PC tech and pretty much have been doing that the whole time. Where I am, local jobs either don't pay or are a 1.5 hour commute away. I am 39 now and I dont see myself doing the network admin thing at 50, and have now swung into being older than my boss & co-workers. I would like to move into more of a management / director role but I dont know how to do that. I really cannot move up at the company I currently work for, and I dont want to jump ship after only a few months. I have lots of education and experience but only as a network admin. Does anyone have any tips to help me in moving up to a manager or director role as I continue in my daily activities?

Good answers above,

Adding to that, managers promote people they like and trust. You've probably seen people promoted and said "why them?" because some higher manager liked and trusted them enough to want them to join the management team. Do your work competently and get in the habit of making your boss look good; get him promoted and you can have his job.

Also, don't talk badly about your boss or any of the bosses where you work, need to grip? Go home and complain to your dog. And stop goofing of on Y!A ;-) just kidding Source(s): http://ohio-insurance-forum.blogspot.com...
It can be difficult for some to move into management roles, especially if you don't have any experience. The first thing is to work on your relationships with your co-workers and your boss. Become the go to guy if you aren't already. If you are already the guy that people come to for answers then I think you need to look at how you project yourself. Do people see you as the guy who knows a lot of tech but doesn't interact well with people?

Talk to your boss and see if he would be willing to send you to supervisor, management and communication seminars to enhance your ability. This will also give the boss the impression that you are interested in furthering yourself and they may think of you next time something opens up.

Read some management and leadership books. Especially leadership books. As you are reading these books ask yourself if you have any of these qualities that they talk about. If you don't, figure out how to make changes to get there. If you do have some of those then ask yourself how to make it stand out.

You may have noticed that a lot of what I said involved sel-evaluation of yourself and abilities. I think it is important to be somewhat self-aware in order to develop the relationships needed in management.

One more thing is volunteer. Don't be the guy who comes in at 8 and leaves at 5. Staying later, working overtime, shows initiative as corny as it sounds. Bosses take it seriously and appreciate even though not all express that appreciation. If you already do that, make sure the boss is aware at your performance appraisals.
Management for 5 years and still learning and always will be.
