Can I get in computer science if I have a felony? It's been 8 yrs I have a degree in computer programming? |
I was charged with theft 8 yrs ago since then I joined the military as a programmer and earned my BA degree and now I'm thinking about getting out just wanted to know if i could get a job if I had a felony i may not be correct but im pretty sure a fellony doesnt have to be put down on apps after 7 years in il ne ways it doesnt Most jobs in computer science are *security* jobs. As a matter of policy, some companies won't hire you for *anything*. Even fewer companies will hire you for a sensitive position. You may have more luck with smaller companies. The person who hires you, though, will ask a lot of questions. After all, if you prove untrustworthy, he's going to lose *his* job, as well, and maybe the entire company will go pfffft. Let's clear up a few things first! As a rule of law you must declare your past criminal record (a felony especially) on ALL applications-except if you have had the felony discharge-dismissed or set aside. The military does not recruit convicted felons unless they have a waiver from the court system. That is in your favor. However, it is up to the companies hiring practices as to their specifications on hiring someone with a criminal background. Much depends on what the circumstances of the activity were, how you were recruited (if it was by court order and you fulfilled your obligation to the court and the military then you should have documentation or can get such to be able to say NO to the question) or you can apply to have the conviction "set aside". Just see an attorney to get the right paper work, back it up with documentation from your service record and apply yourself, without paying an attorney to do it for you. Dr. Tommy Skelton |
