What am I going to do in this occupation? Leather chemists are experts on the processing of all types of leather. They should have a good knowledge on all aspects of making leather, and should know how to deal with problems when they arise. Leather chemists are involved in the preservation of the hides and skins, the tanning of these hides and skins, and the final finishing of the leather. Knowledge of the quality tests that leather is' subjected to is also important. Requirements What kind of personality do I need? A mathematical and scientific aptitude are important. You should have a strong interest in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Where can I work? Leather chemists can be employed as laboratory analysts, progressing to works chemists at large tanneries, carrying out chemical analyses of raw materials and production samples for process control, waste water management and quality assurance. As experience is gained, suitably qualified persons can become involved in technical development, occupying senior supervisory positions such as technical and production managers. Alternatively, qualified leather chemists may work in the research and development sections of major supply companies, providing tanning and other materials to the leather industry or join a leather research institution (such as LIRI Technologies) involved in basic research, technical development and training. A further possibility for employment is the Clothing, Leather and Footwear Division of the South African Bureau of Standards which drafts specifications for various types of production leather and applications of leather footwear, gloves, handbags, automotive upholstery and furniture upholstery, as well as many others. The Clothing, Leather and Footwear Laboratory also employs people to test the various types of leather and footwear. Can I work for myself in this occupation? The cost of setting up a large tannery is high and it is unlikely that most individuals would be able to afford it. However, there are a number of tanners who specialize in high value leathers and who own their own smaller businesses. Hope this helps, good luck, Savvy Source(s): CareerAge - Leather Technology career information Post Resum茅 | Jobs today | Jobs abroad* | Job Alert | Nich茅 Jobs | Freshers* Employers ...
