Recently I got promoted in my company. I work for consulting company and work changes from time to time. My boss wants me to take management responsibilities. However, my core strength is technology. I asked that I get to learn more technical skills in my new assignment. My boss said, thats ok if I want to do that but its not the best thing for my future and he wants me to take more management responsibilities. Please advise. I come from a very strong technical skills background and my recent assignment was as a technical lead.
It's very common to get promoted in a direction you never wanted to go. I was hired by my last company as a marketing admin, was promoted to office manager, and eventually became a facilities manager. I was good at it, but I hated every minute of it. For me, I'd rather be making less money doing what I love. I left that job for a new one doing basic admin and HR work, and I'm very happy now.
Talk to your boss again and explain that, while you appreciate his advice and his concern for your future, you don't feel you'd be happy going into management and would rather direct your career path in another direction. Hopefully he'll respect your wishes and help you work towards your own goals.
Good luck! |
