How long does it take to become a Sr. Programmer? |
After you receive your Bachelors in Comp Science. Depending on how good you are, lucky getting assignments, finding dream job with opportunities, maybe 15 years on average. First you have to be qualified in a cluster of related programming languages, then you need to be hired in a job like Junior Programmer, but most people do not start out in that position. Then you have to do such a superlative job as a Junior Programmer that you are on the fast track to higher position. But to be seen doing a superlative job, you have to get assignments, where your work will be seen by people who know you doing a great job, and have influence to say you should be promoted. That is a rare combination ... programmers do not pick what to do ... they get assignments. There is no simple or single answer to your question. Different companies, regions within the US, and technical areas within computer science all have different standards and nomenclature. In addition, your own skills and performance will factor in. Nothing in the world is a given. Truth is that you could get a Sr Programming job tomorrow working at a small company in a mid-sized city for $22,000 a year. On the other hand, a Sr. Programming job with major international company may take 10 years or more, assuming supervision and project leadership are important aspects of the job. Of course, the up side here is that some of these jobs pay six figures or more with bonuses. Learn your lesson while you are young: titles are irrelevant. |
