How to figure out exactly what my job title should be? |
I started a new job as a 'project manager' my official title is 'project specialist' but I do all admin work. I don't work on any projects. I help users with problems with my system that I work on. I inform users of delays and such... its more of a systems admin job without looking into the technical aspects of this... what kind of job do you think this is ? and what should I do to move to the next level as I feel I can do much more than this ? Thanks! people don't like to think about it but job title is very important not for this job, but the next one. clarify what your actual title is and what you signed up for see if you can get what you signed up for. It shouldn't be a major breaking point for you to discontinue work, but it'll be a sore point if they short changed you there. as for which title, it depends on the direction you want to go. having a manager title will help with your next job greatly since it is 'management.' often people in a job for a long time transition from one role to another, but do not take a new title on thinking it's not important. not true - get the title of the job you actually do, if you manage people get a management title, if you've moved up show some movement in that direction also. sadly, I knew people who didn't take a new title in a job for a number of years and ended up leaving the job with an assistant or minor title role which isn't good. basically it means you don't know how to take care of yourself in the business world. Keep an eye open for job openings that more fit your skills and apply. |
