How on earth Do I get an ICT job in this day and age??

I keep looking for work in Information Technology, or Anything related to ICT at all. Im a HNC student in Business Information Technology & Computer Science, and where ever I look, there are no jobs, or plenty of jobs not willing to give me a chance! Should I just give up my education and give up on my dreams and just go on the dole like every other person in my post code?
Or is there a way to actually get an IT job??

Hi - Getting the type of job you are looking for is very difficult.
Many people start in, dared I say it, 'Customer Support'.
It's a typical Catch22 situation, where nobody wants to employ you because you don't have the experience, but nobody wants to give you the experience.
I recently applied for a very low-level IT maintenance job. It was only part-time and the hourly rate was rubbish. There were 40+ applicants and I didn't even get an interview.
Many other IT people start of by doing a bit of IT Support for charities as a means of gaining practical experience.
Sign on the dole and express your enthusiasm to work. Bad as the Jobcentre is, they often do have contacts that can be useful. You can, I believe, work up to 16 hours a week without it affecting your benefit, if you can get paid for it, so much the better.
You could try working your way through local companies (use Yellow Pages) and offer your services part-time for free:-((, this will give you something to add to your CV.
Ask the IT department where you gained your qualifications, see if they'll give you anything.
Good luck with your job search.
I feel your pain - i'm in exactly the same boat!!! What I suggest you do, which I'm going to do on monday, is go to a careers advisor and get them to have a look at your CV. You may think it is excellent but the career advisor will be able to give you some suggestion on how to improve it!! There is always room for improvement on a CV. I'm going to get some help in covering letter writing skills because I am so bad a writing them - i think that's what is letting me down!! But don't give up - you'll get something!!
I'm a recruiter in the IT industry, working mainly with global software vendors. I understand that you're looking for an entry-level job, but typically, the people that I recruit have Masters degrees and can speak two or three languages as a minimum. Basically, you definitely need higher qualifications than just an HNC to actually work for an IT company.

But if you're wanting to work in IT for a non-IT organisation, then have you tried looking through the careers department of your college for a job? I used to work for an organisation where they hired two students at a time to work in the IT Support dept. You may find something like this, and you could try approaching organisations directly. You'd be better off trying charities and small local businesses first off, as they are the companies most likely to get involved in such a scheme. They won't pay you well, but I'm sure you realise at this point that just getting the experience is what's important.

Also, I know it's drastic, but you might also like to consider relocating to an area where there are more opportunities for this type of thing.

No, do not go on the dole - people who do that are losers. There is always an alternative. You sound like you're relatively young; you should be aware that if you choose to be unemployed now, you're putting yourself in a position where no employer will want to employ you in the future. And if you've got, say, forty years of working life left, that's a long time to be sitting on your ****.
