Does anyone have a Career Identity Crisis? |
I need help. I am having a hard time firguring out my job and/or career at this point in my life. I have various skills related to web design, web programming, drafting and general IT. I have no focus and have had dead-end jobs with no hope of getting out, except for going back to school)I have an AA and a tech degree, but need BA/BS, but I don't what degree to go for and how that will corelate to a specific career and job, because every employer wants different skills. Sometimes I want to learn 1 or 2 things a be stuck in that)like web coding), but other times I dont like doing the same thing over and over again. I have also been self-employed and worked in a corporation, and both, in my opinion, suck., I want to learn for myself not just for the job, but when your job only allows you to do 1 or 2 things, then what, learn on your own, but I want to get paid to learn more, but I dont want to be jack of all trades, master of nothing Any thougths Wow, I'm in the exact same boat. I am currently in school finishing my BS. The school offers both Computer Science and IT, with IT being more hands-on. Most people in the field suggested that I go with CS but the classes looked very boring (a lot of math and theory) and impractical so I went with IT. A long time ago, I wanted to be a web designer but with all of the do-it-yourself tools out there and outsourcing going on I got out of that mode. I've found out through classes that I like database administration more than the other subjects even though I have other interests. So I'm pursuing a specialty in that area while I can still say I have a bit of experience in other areas. See if your employer offers reimbursement and take a few classes. You'll figure out what you like. |
