I have been working in the computer profession since the 1960's. The business has evolved a lot since then & I have met many younger professionals who followed a different route into it than me.

You do not need a degree from a regular 4 year college. Depending on your potential career path, there are a large number of junior colleges and technical schools that provide the needed know-how.

The potential alternative job paths are enormous, but in many areas work is being off-shore out-sourced to India and other nations. My guess is that they cannot do this with the work that needs hands on technicians, like in the hardware support area, and it is not working well for the areas that need people who have a good understanding of the culture and business that the computer system supports.

Years ago, computer technicians were generally paid more than other professionals, but also there was a tradition of working long hours. In other professions, if you working on some proejct & it gets to be 5 pm in evening, you knock off & continue on that until 8.30 next day. In the computer profession, the tradition is that you are like in the army, at war with some problem, you don't quit until victory. If this means you have to go 3 days and 3 nites with no sleep, no meals, then that's what you have to do.

Over the years, this has changed. Computer technicians are no longer getting pay that is above that of other workers, but we are still expected to put in much longer hours than anyone else.

Your expectations for pay seem to me to be in fantasy land. Take a lootk at some advertisements for computer professionals. What pay are they offring, and what credentials are they looking for, such as X years experience in different computer skills. You do not get that kind of pay, while you are doing those X years of experience.

Provided you can do the work competently, and manage not to annoy too many people, your job security is way above other people, because management knows that if there is a problem, they can depend on you.

Your talent with human languages could help you in companies that have operations in multiple nations.

Consider a manufacturer with factories in USA, Mexico, and some other country where they speak something other than English and Spanish. The same computerized system is talking to all these people, and needs to do it productively. People are communicating with the corporate system in their native languages, and understanding what was input by other people in a different language, that they do not know. To make sure the computer system is working properly, at some point it is helpful to have trouble shooters who know all the languages involved.
