Problem getting promoted, just graduated? |
Been at financial company for 7 years, working in IT for past 3 years. I'm 23 years old and just graduated with a Bachelor's in Business Admin. in Information Systems. I am 2nd level helpdesk but I really want to move up into either Ntwk Eng. or Programmer or anything that will utilize my skills. Managers here know that I have my degree and I've applied to a # of positions, but no luck. What do you think I'm lacking or the reason why they are hesistant to hire me? Lack of experience? How can I get experience without getting experience? I'm stuck in a dead end. Anyone out there that has been in the same shoes but is now a mgr or high level IT? I want to know what it is I should do in order to move up... I have always been in the same position as you. You can't get a job without experience yet, you can't get experience with out a job. I have still yet to figure that one out after 12 years post college. Part of the reason you aren't getting promoted is that your employer has a duty to get done and YOU are in the position of doing it. They need someone to do the job that you are doing. Train another person to do your job without them really knowing that you are training them. Ask them to help you.. whatever the case may be. Another thing that you can do is to have a heart to heart with your supervisor. Tell him how you feel and that you feel ready to take on more responsibilities after completing your education. If they paid for your education, remind them about a little concept of Return On Investment. Your education was an investment to them and that they won't see their return unless you are fully utlilized within the organization. If they continue to have you work at your current position, they have wasted a lot of money. Becareful with this approach though. Your employer might realize that you are right, that they DID waste a lot of money on you and cut their losses by letting you go. |
