What careers are available in GIS? |
Hi I was thinking of learning a trade at the local community college and they have a certificate program for GIS. Does anyone know what kinds of jobs are available in that field and how they pay and what kind of company would I be working for? GIS = Global Information Systems Ya, I can answer this for you. Firstly, GIS is "geographic information systems" and it is a career that involves using maps for solving business problems. The simplest uses of GIS are in map making. Most civil engineering companies use GIS so they employ technicians. Public and private utilities, forestry services, school and government districts (city states, etc.) all use it... these groups employ a lot of GIS staff to make maps and to analyse where their things of value are, were, or will be located. Salaries and hourly wages vary by area in the U.S. (would use GIS to prove that) as well as how much experience and training you have. With a certificate from a trade school, you could get a $25./hour job in my area. I am a senior GIS staff professional. I live in SA and am struggling to find a job, even though i graduated some 6 months ago. You would be employed by local and state government departments, power and water utilities, and if you register with contracting agencies such as EBR, GHD and SKM, job vacancies are plentiful, again, in the eastern states. Contractors for GIS can expect between $20 and $35/hr, whereas full time employees can expect to get above $50,000/yr. Hope this answers your question. Any queries just reply to this message.
