What to do to become a computer tech...? |
Ok, i just graduated high school this summer. I really like fixing computers, and i know a good bit about it. What should i do to persue a career in computers. I want to go to college, but im not sure what degree to go for, or even what major is best for me. what do you guys think. Does your school offer an MIS degree? It should combine a mix of programing classes with business classes, an excellent skill set for a network administrator to have. If not, computer science or even business administration would be a good choice for a bachelor's degree. Remember, a lot of IT work is customer service and project management. It's not just about fixing computers. Another alternative would be to pursue a vocational technical school. Various computer tech certifications exist, such as the A+ (basic hardware and software), MCSE/MCP (Microsoft), CCNA/CCNP/CCIE (Cisco), RHCT/RHCE (RedHat Linux). Unlike a college degree, these certifications must be regularly updated and do not allow for as much flexibility in career changes, but they are highly sought after in the IT field. I'd suggest getting a part time job in the field if you can. Many colleges will offer positions in their computer department as junior network administrators or even lab administrators. Take advantage of them! You'll be happy to have the work experience. Source(s): 10 years of experience in IT. I would recommend getting your A+ certification and go from there. You will learn almost everything you need to be a service tech. Your local college should have a course and then you just need to find a A+ testing center. |
