| *Ostroff, Fair and Company>>>United Kingdom Taxes |
Does any country have a higher basic level of Value Added Tax than the UK's 17.5%? If so, what is it? |
The UK has a Value Added Tax of 17.5% on most goods and services, with some exceptions like food, books and childrne's clothes. Other European countries have VAT (it's part of the EU Treaties); but the rate does not seem to be as high. In the shops, VAT is a bit like local sales taxes in the United States. What rate are these? In fact 20 countries in the EU have higher rates of VAT than the UK. Austria 20% Belgium 21% Czech Rep 19% Denmark 25% Estonia 18% Finland 22% France 19.6% Greece 19% Hungary 20% Ireland 21% Italy 20% Latvia 18% Lithuania 18% Malta 18% Netherlands 19% Poland 22% Portugal 21% Slovakia 19% Slovenia 20% Sweden 25% The closest I have seen is in Ontario, Canada where there are two taxes, GST and PST. I think these are 15% when combined! Given the knock on effect of the ridiculous tax on fuel here the tax is a lot greater on goods than just the 17.5% up front. Robbing bastards!!! From what I know,Tanzania has the higheist level compared to that of 17.5% of UK.In Tanzania the Value Added Tax is 20% which is also charged to goods and services(most of them with exception to other exempted goods offcourse). Therefore,to answer your question I can say yes There are other countries with higher rate of VAT than that of UK. |
