Yes, if it is over a few pounds then you will have to pay VAT on the goods
I live in Ireland and I buy cosmetics (worth up to 100 euro at a time) from a US website regularly. People have said to me that they have been charged duty on products from this same website, but I've ordered about 15 times now and I've never had to pay any duty whatsoever. I think they only check incoming goods randomly...not sure how you can find out in advance though.
(Also, I have my stuff delivered to the office for convenience, maybe that makes a difference).
It's a matter of luck, customs will pick a parcel randomly and you may have to pay but you will probably get away with it
yes, ull probably have to pay import duty on the goods...

i bought a psp from ebay a year ago...aswell as paying 30 postage , i got charged another 45 vat from customs...
You'll pay 17.5% tax on it and possibly a Royal Mail charge if they pay it for you. I have had the experience of buying something from CDWOW (perfume) and customs opened it to check the contents, decided it was over x-amount and needed VAT paying on it. That wouldn't have been too bad as the item was only about 拢18 but the Royal Mail were good enough to pay the VAT for me and then changed me an extra 拢5 (or so) on top of the VAT for the privilege.
If they are over 拢18 then you will have to pay duty + VAT on the cost of gods and delivery. To find out what the duty will be you will have to contact customs to get a commodity code. Ring 01702 366 077 to contact there classification service. Otherwise look at their website www.hmrc.gov.uk.
