Filing jointly or single? |
Is it better to file jointly or singlely? which way do you get more back? If you are married, you can file "Married - Filing Jointly" or "Married - Filing Separately". Jointly is usually better. If you are not married, you can file as "Single" or "Head of Household" if you support a child. You'll normally pay the least tax by filing Married Filing Jointly. If you're married, you can't file Single. Your only other option would be Married Filing Separately. In almost all cases, you are better off filing jointly than separately. Usually, the only reason married people file separately is that they are legally separated. (If you are married, you can't really file singly--you can file as married with separate returns.) If you are married, you are not allowed to file as single. If you are NOT married, you are not allowed to file a joint return. If you're married and asking about joint or married filing separately, you will almost always pay more tax by filing separately rather than joint. If you file married filing jointly you automatically get a 10,000 deduction,If you file married filing seperate you only get the Sigle exempition which is 3,300.So most times it is better to file jointly unless your spouse has a tax debt and then you need to make sure if you file together you also file an injured/innocent spouse form so you arent responsible for their tax debt. |
