If my wife files medical deductions, (married filing separately) but not for me, can I file my own medicals? |
i have substantil medica bills, my wife and i file married but separate returns, if she files her medical deductions only can I still file an itemized return, maried but filing individually, and still file for my medical deductions? If she itemizes then you must itemize as well. You will be filing married filing seperate. In order to take advantage of medical expenses you will have to have more than 7.5% of your AGI. Check out the Schedule A for more info. Source(s): http://www.irs.gov http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sab.... Since your spouse has itemized deductions then you have to itemize also, means you can file your own medicals. Yes you can. For your medical bills to be deductible, they have to exceed 7.5% of the income shown on the return for that person - you only deduct the part that's over 7.5%. This rule applies to each of your returns. Each of you can only show your own bills, not your spouse's, on your return. Only if you have the same medical conditions as your wife. |
