Can I claim myself as head of household if I live by myself? |
I rented a house all of last year and never had a roommate. Does HoH apply? I surely would like it to, as it more than doubled my refund when I checked it If no one lives with you, it is possible to be able to file as Head of Household if: 1. You maintain a separate home for a dependent parent, or 2. You have a dependent child who is away at school. But otherwise, no, you cannot file as head of household. You may file single independent. To qualify as HoH you must have had a dependent living with you for not less than 6 months of the tax year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/head_of_hou... No, you can't - head of household filing status is only available for people providing a home for a dependent, and paying more that half of the cost of providing that home. In order to file as HoH you must maintain a home for a dependent who lived with you for more that half of the year. Since you live by yourself, you can't file HoH. as stated by others you cannot get the HOH but the personal exemption is the same for Single and HOH .this year the exemption is 3,300 dollars for both HOH and filing single. |
